Hundreds of Venezuelan opposition members gather this Wednesday in Caracas to protest against the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) which validated the controversial victory announced by the president’s electoral body Nicolas Maduro in the presidential elections, while the largest anti-Chavez coalition claims that its standard-bearer won, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
«Today, one month after our glorious victory on July 28, we Venezuelans unite, inside and outside our country, and we shout with vigor. (…) Wherever you are, let us sing our national anthem together and with pride!»expressed through X the main supporter of González Urrutia, Maria Corina Machadowho also shared images of protesters in Japan, Belgium and other parts of the world.
In Caracas, Venezuelans responded to the call of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) by raising banners with messages calling for a “peaceful transition,” as demanded by Machado and the standard-bearer of the opposition bloc.
Other banners promote the slogan of the call, «Act kills sentence»in relation to the “83.5%” of these documents that the PUD claims to have gathered through witnesses and members of the table on the night of the elections, and which – they insist – demonstrate Maduro’s defeat, despite the official result, which was validated by the TSJ.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating González Urrutia for the “alleged commission” of “usurpation of functions and forgery of public documents”, among other crimes, despite the fact that the minutes have been validated by international monitoring groups, such as the UN panel of experts, who were invited to participate in the elections.
Machado is appearing in public for the fourth time in Caracas since the elections, since when she has been under cover – as she herself confirmed shortly afterwards – for fear of her safety, following the post-election protests, which left 25 dead and more than 2,400 arrested, according to the authorities, in rejection of the official election result.
Meanwhile, Chavismo called on its supporters, also for this Wednesday, to celebrate the “first month of the great popular victory of July 28” of Maduro, despite the fact that several foreign governments have requested the National Electoral Council (CNE) to publish the minutes and thus clarify the questionable result of the presidential elections.
