The corona vaccine from Pfizer and BioNtech is a drop in the ocean in the short term, said IC doctor Diederik Gommers in Along the Line and Environs. The chairman of the Intensive Care Association spoke to the Pfizer director and said he was “a little shocked” by what he heard.
“There are now 50 million vaccines produced worldwide. For the Netherlands, that means that 10,000 people per month can be helped in the first months. Those are very small numbers.” Gommers adds that vaccines from other companies are on the way and Pfizer can scale up production, but that will take time. “We are far from there,” said the IC doctor.
Difficult winter
Gommers responded in the NPO Radio 1 program also on the news that the temporary closure of amusement parks, sex clubs and cultural institutions is not renewed. The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) was not involved in that decision, he says. “The advice is still being written”, said OMT member Gommers.
He calls on the cabinet to be careful, because the “difficult winter period with cold viruses” is yet to come. “And we learned from the summer that we eased too quickly when things went well. Because we had more contacts, things went wrong.”
