Hundreds of Russian Tanks Destroyed in Ukraine, The Causes Shocking

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Hundreds of tanks Russia crushed in Ukraine since President Vladimir Putin started the invasion.

The reason for this is quite surprising because of a design flaw that makes the tank easier to target.

During the invasion of Ukraine, many Russian tanks were destroyed. According to military observers, Moscow’s problem is not only the number of damaged tanks, but also a design flaw.

“What we are witnessing against Russian tanks is a design flaw. Any enemy attack that manages to hit the tank will quickly ignite the ammunition then cause a huge explosion so turret really exploded,” said Sam Bendett, Advisor to the Russian Studies Program at the Center for a New American Security CNN on Wednesday (27/4).

Explosion severe destruction turret or the top of this Russian tank is called jack-in-the-box effect.

Jack-in-the-box effect is the specific impact of the massive destruction of a tank or armored vehicle caused by an ammunition explosion that causes the top of the tank to explode so hard it bounces off. In general terms jack-in-the-box effect actually refers to damage to children’s toys or dolls.

Defense industry analyst Nicholas Drummond said the defect in the tank made the combat vehicle particularly vulnerable to target destruction.

“If you don’t get out in the first second, you’re in trouble,” Drammond said.

Drummond said the ammunition explosion caused problems for nearly all armored vehicles Russia uses in Ukraine. He cited the BMD-4 infantry fighting vehicle as an example, which is a “moving coffin” that “easily vanishes” when hit by a rocket.

The problem has to do with how tank ammunition is stored. Unlike modern Western tanks, Russian tanks carried a lot of shells in their turrets. This makes the tanks very vulnerable as they can detonate their entire ammunition store with up to 40 rounds.

The resulting shock wave is capable of detonating and blowing a tank turret as high as a two-story building, as seen in videos circulating on social media.
