Hundreds of quarantined workers: unrest after Corona outbreak in southern Italy

After a corona outbreak among foreign agricultural workers, there was a clash between workers and the local population in a small southern Italian town. The riot police sent reinforcements to the city of Mondragone, northwest of Naples, on Friday.

Around 700 agricultural workers, most of them from Bulgaria, have been quarantined there since Monday in a building complex. 43 workers had previously tested positive for the corona virus.

“Nobody is allowed to leave these buildings for two weeks. The police and army control the zone 24 hours a day,” said Campania President Vincenzo de Luca, local media said. He would quarantine the entire city if there were a hundred positive cases, he announced. According to health authorities, all residents should be tested for the virus.
