The O’Higgins Regional Health Service, the Regional Education Service and the Chilean Epilepsy League held a workshop at the UOH in Rancagua on Epilepsy and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), where more than 200 teachers and professionals from educational establishments in the region participated.
The head of the regional health portfolio, Dr. Carolina Torres Pinto, was in charge of opening the activity, highlighting the intersectoral work that seeks the well-being of people with epilepsy and ASD as their environment.
“This update on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Epilepsy invites us to strengthen intersectoral work to address the prevalence of these diseases and how to deal with them in the educational context, so we thank those who participated in the education sector and of course also the Chilean League against Epilepsy. We hope to continue to delve deeper into these issues,” said the head of the health portfolio, Dr. Torres.
For her part, Loreto González, Coordinator of Education and Outreach of the Chilean League Against Epilepsy, commented that “Education on Epilepsy is one of the most important pillars, since it is a disease that, despite being very prevalent, is very old, very little is known about it, we talk very little about it and it is surrounded by many stigmas. That is why this work between health and education is so relevant, since it is addressed in a comprehensive manner.”
In turn, one of the exhibitors, Dr. César Mateluna, Pediatric Neurologist at the Dr. Franco Ravera Zunino Hospital, said that “these instances of multidisciplinary meetings are relevant for the education and health sectors, where we can communicate better and bring together the guidelines on these pathologies.”
It is worth mentioning that the Chilean League Against Epilepsy was represented by nurse Katherine Moreno, psychologist Daniela Araya and special education teacher Maribel Alcaide.
