Hundreds of people have been evacuated in Spain as a result of a wild fire

A wildfire in southern Spain has evacuated some 900 people on Thursday and closed several roads, authorities said.

The fire broke out on Wednesday evening, September 8, in the mountains of the province of Malaga. About 250 firefighters are fighting the flames and 26 planes are in use.

The evacuation of people took place in the municipality of Estepona.

Several residents told Spanish television that the police had given them only a few minutes to prepare for the evacuation.

Firefighters explained that fighting flames is hampered by strong winds, heat, drought and steep slopes.

“The wind is getting stronger, but (..) it is blowing from the west, moving the fire away from the built-up areas,” the head of Malaga’s fire service told reporters.

Local authorities suspect that the fire was caused intentionally because the fire started in several places at the same time.
