During the bird migration it is more common for animals to fly against the high buildings of New York, but never as massive as this year. According to Christiaan Both, bird migration expert at the University of Groningen, this is due to the strong headwinds that the birds have to contend with this year. “If migratory birds have a headwind, they fly lower than when they have a tailwind. The storm made them close to the buildings,” Both told NOS.
