Hundreds of migrants rescued in Mediterranean Sea

According to the French aid organization SOS Méditerranée, the aid action, which lasted five hours, was carried out in collaboration with the German Sea-Watch and the German Resqship. The rescue operation was in Tunisian waters, according to the organization.

The migrants were rescued from a multi-storey wooden boat, the organization says. The aid organization says the ship Ocean Viking is now full, because people were already rescued earlier this week. About 555 people are on board the Ocean Viking. Among the passengers is a three-month-old baby. The aid organization says the ship must go to a safe harbor as soon as possible.

United Nations figures show that more than 900 migrants have died in the Mediterranean this year. The crossing from Libya and Tunisia to Europe is dangerous and the overcrowded boats often get into trouble in the middle of the sea.
