Several hundred migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, DPA reported, citing the Italian agency ANSA.

About 270 people reached the small Mediterranean island at night. In addition to those who arrived earlier for 24 hours on the island, located between the island. Sicily and Tunisia, another 500 people have arrived. The accommodation center there is obviously overcrowded.

According to ANSA, police patrol boats are involved in rescuing boats carrying migrants. On Monday, the ship “Geo Barents” of the charity organization “Doctors Without Borders” transported to the port of the Sicilian city of Augusta over 320 people in distress at sea, BTA reported.

People continue to take risky journeys from the shores of Libya and Tunisia to reach the European Union by sea in the hope of a better life.

Some of them are in distress at sea and if they are not rescued by the Coast Guard or charities, they risk drowning.

According to UN officials, about 1,040 migrants have died in the central Mediterranean since the beginning of the year. Most often their destination is Italy.

In 2021, nearly 35,600 migrants arrived in Italy by boat – more than twice as many as in the same period last year, according to the Interior Ministry.

The problem is a constant source of controversy on the Italian political scene. Rome wants the EU to reconsider the distribution of migrants in Europe.
