The other half meter rule was not observed, so De Blasio was forced to intervene. On Twitter, he expressed his anger at the state of affairs. “Something completely unacceptable happened in Williamsburg tonight: a large funeral in the midst of this pandemic. When I heard about it, I went on site myself to make sure the crowd was taken apart. What I saw WILL NOT be tolerated as long as we fight the coronavirus. ”
De Blasio emphasizes that his message applies to everyone. “The time for warning has passed. I have ordered the police to intervene immediately or even make arrests when people gather in large groups. This is about stopping the disease and saving lives. Point.” No arrests have been made.
His messages can count on the necessary criticism. For example, the American Jewish Committee said on Twitter: “Mister Mayor, most of the Jewish community follows the rules. We donate blood, we raise money for our neighbors and we work in hospitals. We deserve more than generalization and pointers. ”
The Blasio was also under attack earlier this week after he was filmed walking through a park, 11 miles from his home. He was accused of making a non-essential trip, while urging New Yorkers to stay at home as much as possible.
New York is hit hard by the corona virus. More than 17,000 people in the city have since died of the virus. More than one million infections have been diagnosed across the country.
