Tens of thousands of passengers are affected, the Working Group of German Airports (ADV) announced on Monday. Accordingly, the airlines had to cancel “a high three-digit number of flight connections” because of the strike.
The service trade union Verdi has called for the warning strikes at the airports in Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Hanover, Berlin, Leipzig and Bremen. All-day warning strikes are planned for Tuesday at Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe airports.
At the largest German airport in Frankfurt, only transit passengers are to be processed from the start of operations, said a Verdi spokesman.
Fraport advises against travel
The airport operator Fraport asked all guests who wanted to board in Frankfurt not to travel to the airport. There will be no way to catch the scheduled flight for the entire duration of the strike. Delays are expected in the transit processes with changing passengers.
Collective bargaining between Verdi and the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) on more salaries for around 25,000 employees will continue on Wednesday. Among other things, the union is demanding a wage increase of at least 1 euro per hour for a period of twelve months. In addition, she wants to achieve that regionally different wages are adjusted “to the highest wage level”.
ADV general manager Ralph Beisel criticized the strikes as “disproportionate and excessive”. He called on the social partners to clarify the disputed points at the negotiating table. “I have absolutely no understanding that Verdi is carrying out the strikes on the backs of the travellers, the airlines and the airports,” explained Beisel. Many airports are currently still affected by the high losses during the corona pandemic.
