SNCB announced last week that the federal Railway Police and Securail will step up control actions in the stations and on the trains. Since wearing a mouth mask on May 4 became mandatory on public transport, 600 administrative fines have already been issued by Securail, 100 of which since last week, says NMBS spokesman Dimitri Temmerman.
An administrative fine from Securail is fifty euros, but that amount can still rise if someone is caught several times. The number of train travelers per day has now risen to half the level for the corona lockdown, according to Temmerman.
The mask mask requirement applies to all public transport, including tram, bus and metro.
Since May 4, the Railway Police and the local police have jointly imposed 1,075 fines for not wearing a mouth mask, says Jana Verdegem, spokeswoman for the federal police. This applies to trains and train stations as well as to other public transport. A fine by the police also amounts to 250 euros.
