Firefighters were still at the scene, which was described as “active” an hour later. No injuries were immediately reported. The cause of the fire is unknown.
The Brooklyn fire came on the heels of another raging blaze, escalating to five alarms, on Lenox Avenue in Harlem on Wednesday.
Although the fire that broke out in Manhattan was under control at noon Wednesday (it was declared under control around 7:30 a.m., the FDNY said), a few businesses that were iconic in Harlem were completely damaged.
This fire broke out on Lennox Avenue near West 135th Street around 3 a.m., not far from Harlem Hospital. The massive fire started as a “cockloft fire,” a fire that starts in the void space between the interior ceiling and the exterior ceiling.
“Units responded within four minutes and found heavy smoke and fire through the roof of this building,” said FDNY Deputy Chief John Sarrocco. “The fire continued to spread in the cockloft area, which is the space between the roof of the upper deck and the roof, through six warehouses. Due to concerns about the stability of the building and that large volume of fire, we had to remove our units. “
Telemundo 47 and our sister network NBC 4 New York were on the scene for much of the morning as fire crews on the tower stairs worked to extinguish the flames of the Harlem fire, putting as much water on the fire as possible. , but it was still burning in the morning hours.
A firefighter was taken to nearby Harlem Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.
About six to seven commercial businesses were destroyed due to flames and water damage, including a furniture store and Manna’s, a beloved restaurant in the area.
