Hundreds of people gathered at the Roeterseiland campus of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) on Tuesday afternoon to express solidarity with pro-Palestinian students who set up a protest camp there on Monday and were eventually removed by the police.
An ANP reporter on site estimates the number of demonstrators present around 5:15 p.m. at approximately a thousand. The demonstration by students, faculty and staff of the university started at 4 p.m. More and more people are joining. The demonstrators express dissatisfaction with, among other things, the actions of the police during Monday’s demonstration. “We are peaceful, what are you,” they shout to the officers present.
The group walked past the Amsterdam Law School, accompanied by the police, after which they came to a stop at the intersection with Roetersstraat. The road was full of demonstrators, preventing traffic from passing. Police were on both sides of the road to monitor the situation. The group is now moving via Sarphatistraat to Weesperplein. The police are also walking in that direction.
‘End the genocide’
The demonstrators present shout slogans such as ‘Free, free Palestine’ and ‘Boycott Israel’. Some carry Palestinian flags and signs with texts such as ‘End the genocide’ and ‘Proud of our students’. They also carry drums with which they make sounds. There are many people watching along the road.
The teachers endorse the students’ call on the UvA Executive Board to cut ties with “agencies that are complicit in genocide,” sociology teacher Sam Hamer said earlier on Tuesday. “We are demonstrating to push the UvA in that direction.”
