Hundreds of corona deaths still stored in refrigerated trucks New York | Abroad

The trucks, which served as an emergency solution to the high number of corona deaths in the city since April, contain 750 bodies. The cars were set up to give families extra time for a suitable funeral, but were intended as a temporary solution, Dina Maniotis of Chief Medical Examiner’s Office reports to the New York Post.

Many of the families of the deceased in the storage trucks have asked the city to bury the bodies on Hart Island. Counsel Mark Gjonaj wonders why the bodies are still stored in the refrigerated trucks and this request has not yet been accepted. He denounces the word ‘storage’ when referring to the dead.

Because of the high number of deaths funeral companies had to work overtime, the refrigerated trucks were used as a temporary solution. At the time, that was 1,300 bodies, according to the New York Post.

Hart Island is the country’s largest public cemetery. There are more than 1 million people there. In 2020, a record number of people was buried there with 2,666. This would usually be 1,200.
