Hundreds of Britons have taken to the streets for the third night in a row out of anger over the murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard and government plans to curtail the right to protest.
A London police officer has been charged with the murder. 48-year-old Wayne Couzens appeared in court for the second time on Tuesday. He has been charged with kidnapping and killing the woman.
The police are also under fire for the crackdown at a vigil for Sarah Everard. According to the corps leadership, action was taken to enforce the distance rules.
London mayor Sadiq Khan has said he is not happy about the harsh crackdown, in which four women were arrested. In subsequent protests, the police took more caution.
Slogans
More than 600 demonstrators gathered at the British Parliament on Tuesday evening. Demonstrations were also held at the police headquarters. Participants shouted slogans like “all cops are bastards,” and rattled on cordons at the station. The protesters at parliament asked for the resignation of Chief of Police Cressida Dick and Minister of the Interior Priti Patel.
In the meantime, parliament has partly agreed to a law by Minister Patel that should make it easier to ban demonstrations that could lead to major disturbances of the peace. The protests were also directed against that law. Demonstrators carried signs with the text “kill the bill” (delete the law).
