The protest was heralded by the protesters as the “march against fascism.” On the previous two Sundays, there were about 1,000 arrests.
Stalemate
Since the end of August, demonstrations have been held almost daily against President Lukashenko. The protests are greatest on Sundays. The protests began after Lukashenko claimed victory in the presidential election. It is established that the result was falsified.
For the time being, there seems to be little movement in the stalemate in which the regime and the opposition have found themselves. At the end of last month, a nationwide strike was announced by opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya not off the ground. Tichanovskaya, who fled abroad after the election, released one this week visit to the Netherlands.
More than 19,000 demonstrators have now been arrested. Human rights organizations say thousands of them have been maltreated.
