Humpback Whale Sighted Near Castricum Coast: SOS Dolfijn Urges Reporting

A humpback whale has been sighted off the coast near Castricum. It is not unusual for the whale species to swim in the North Sea.

The animal is said to be swimming approximately 1.5 kilometers from the coast, SOS Dolfijn reports on X. According to a spokesperson, the report came from a “reliable observer”.

SOS Dolfijn does not yet have the animal on its radar. As a result, it is not clear whether the animal got lost and what the health of the humpback whale is like. The organization will investigate this first. It is also being checked whether the humpback whale is known to SOS Dolfijn.

“A humpback whale off the Dutch coast does not necessarily have to be an animal in distress. They usually survive well,” the spokesperson explains. The humpback whale never entered the North Sea until this century, but it has in recent years. “The humpback whale has completely discovered the North Sea.”

First, the organization wants to be sure that the animal is not in trouble. That is why people who see the whale swimming are urged to report to SOS Dolfijn.
