Borussia Dortmund bids farewell to a true club legend. Although Marcel Schmelzer was never the big kicker, his dedication, passion and team player mentality made him a leading player for many years. Now Mats Hummels has said goodbye to his longtime teammate in an emotional Instagram post.
Marcel Schmelzer joined the Dortmund U19s in 2005 and quickly made the leap to the pros. The left-back followed in the footsteps of BVB icon Dede and won two championships at a young age and was in the Champions League final in 2013. Schmelzer has played 367 games but has not been able to play in the last two seasons due to injury. His last assignment was June 16, 2020. As expected, the player has now announced the end of his career.
Mats Hummels reacted to the end of his companion’s career on Instagram and wrote special lines to “Schmelle”.
In his post, Hummels recalls the beginning of the long friendship and cooperation and starts a real hymn of praise for the player, who is so underestimated for him.
“As a guy on and off the field, you are a dream for every teammate and coach. Hard-working, ambitious, modest, willing to learn, inquisitive, team-oriented, always and every second with full commitment! Honest, opinionated and still diplomatic”, gushed Hummels.
Schmelzer often had to take criticism in his career because he was not the most filigree footballer and was therefore a kind of scapegoat for many. However, Mats Hummels assures the left-back that he has always been valued in the team as an absolute leader and top performer.
“A lot of people who don’t know what football is all about if you want to win will never understand what you have achieved. We all who have seen you every day know it! It would have been wonderful to see you again on the pitch, but your body has it unfortunately no longer allowed, just as you fought back impressively again,” said the Dortmund central defender.
Schmelzer has definitely achieved a very special status with his companions and the hard core of BVB fans. We can also be sure that one day he will return to the club in a new role.
