More than 18 million people follow Humans of New York, an initiative that began in 2010. Initially photographer Brandon Stanley wanted to stick to portraits of various New Yorkers he encountered in the city, later he also wrote a short personal story.
His photos have often inspired people to help. For example, nearly $1.5 million was raised through a fundraising campaign for a Brooklyn high school and a Pakistani woman, who was abused by her husband, was helped by followers of the page.
