HUMANITY (FIVE VISIONS BY GOYA FOR THE CIRCUS) BRINGS TOGETHER SEVERAL SHORT CIRCUS PIECES Signed by four young directors under the joint direction of Rakel Camacho and with María Folguera as playwright who spins the show.
In it Circus Price TheaterSusan Sontag and Francisco de Goya, a 20th century thinker and an 18th century painter, shake hands on the May 17 to 21 on the stage of the Madrid circus thanks to Humanity (Five visions of Goya for circus)world premiere within the framework of the Price cycle in Spring 2023. It is an own production of Price together with La Grainerie-Fabrique des Arts du Cirque et de l’itinérance de Toulouse, the FRAC de Fuenlabrada, the Espacio Puntocero de Madrid and the French Institute.
Humanity is inspired by a phrase from Goya: “Miserable humanity, it’s your fault”, to bring together different promises and consolidated figures from the international circus and stage scene. The director and playwright Rakel Camacho assumes the stage direction of a set made up of several short circus pieces under the direction of authors of different nationalities: Stefano Fabris is in charge of The scarecrow looked at him with pity.; Zenaida Mayor of strange devotion; Herminio Campillo Cases only; and Ilaria Senter from Wonders or emphatic whims. María Folguera, artistic director of the Teatro Circo Price, is in charge of the dramaturgy together, which includes the actress Fernanda Orazi in the role of Sontag, while Marcos Pereira plays Goya and Julia Monje plays Goya’s Mirror. Together with them, an international cast of young circus artists from different parts of the world (Mexico, Slovakia, Chile, Argentina, Italy and Spain) will parade on stage.
Humanity is presented as a unique spectacle, a cry of the imagination in the face of human horror, a crossroads of times, words and images that unites different visions under a common prism: a look at a distant war, a war centuries ago, which nevertheless it resonates in other closer wars. From the famous War Disasters, Humanity It is presented as a unique and original work that unites Sontag and Goya in a circus setting.
Humanity It brings together, in the words of Folguera, “many of the lines that we have worked on at Price in recent years. Support for local creators and initiatives, the visibility of circus creators, international collaboration, the hybridization between circus and other performing arts and accessibility come together with exciting results”. A work whose creation has been “a journey of several months and different stages of creation between Fuenlabrada, Toulouse and Madrid, to celebrate the authorship of four emerging directors in charge of a talented international cast of young circus artists.”
“A production”, says Folguera, “that has made us travel, learn, listen, observe; marvel at a few words by Susan Sontag or an engraving by Goya, put a trapeze and juggling to the test. We wanted to give our best ourselves, and we hope you enjoy the result as much as we do the process.”
The project is also the result of collaboration between the Teatro Circo Price, La Grainerie-Fabrique des Arts du Cirque et de l’itinérance de Toulouse, the FRAC de Fuenlabrada, the Espacio Puntocero de Madrid, with the support of the Fuenlabrada City Council. and the French Institute. A synergy between institutions that arises with the aim of generating artistic development opportunities for circus directors, promoting circus creation from literary and plastic heritage and offering the public new perspectives on artists and contexts such as Sontag, Goya or war conflicts. .
