Developments in the war in Gaza
Agencies – The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane de Jarric, warned of the continuing bad conditions for hundreds of thousands of residents of the Gaza Strip, in light of a shortage of fuel, food, and other basic materials necessary for life.
Dujarric pointed out that the World Health Organization alerted that doctors in Gaza are performing surgeries without anesthesia.
He stressed that the Secretary-General of the United Nations “is calling for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, but there is a need to discuss this matter, and how it can be implemented.”
Dujarric pointed out the necessity of preserving the territorial integrity of the Gaza Strip, explaining that there is no safe place in Gaza currently.
When asked about the statements of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, accusing both sides of the conflict of committing war crimes, he refused to answer, saying that the High Commissioner “enjoys the full support of the Secretary-General regarding the work he is doing, and as for his statements, he must interpret and clarify them.”
The pace of Palestinian civilians fleeing the combat zone in northern Gaza accelerated after Israeli forces intensified their air and ground campaign there.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Wednesday that about 15,000 people fled on Tuesday, compared to 5,000 on Monday and 2,000 on Sunday.
The Gaza Ministry of Health said on Tuesday that the number of Palestinians killed in the war exceeded 10,300, including more than 4,200 children.
