Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Shortage of Medicines Endangers Lives of Children and Elderly

The suffering of the residents of the Gaza Strip, especially children, is exacerbated due to the significant shortage of medicines, painkillers, and other primary health care supplies, while the shortage extends to even infant formula and vaccines, with the continuation of the war between the Israeli army and the Hamas movement, which has been going on for more than 70 days.

The health authorities in the Gaza Strip announced, on Wednesday, that “all children’s vaccines” had run out in the Gaza Strip, demanding that they be guaranteed to reach all areas, in order to prevent a disaster.

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip confirmed that this has “catastrophic health repercussions on children and the spread of diseases, especially among the displaced in overcrowded shelter centers.”

A letter from US Department employees calling for a “ceasefire in Gaza”

More than 130 employees of the US Department of Homeland Security called on the administration of US President Joe Biden for an “immediate ceasefire in Gaza.”

In the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, the Al-Hurra TV camera was in one of the pharmacies, where it monitored that most of the necessary medications were running out, especially medications for chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

These pharmacies are witnessing a crowd of city residents and displaced people coming from the northern Gaza Strip, hoping to obtain some treatment.

The owner of the pharmacy, Dr. Abdul Hadi, said in his interview with Al-Hurra TV: “We are facing a major shortage of infant formula and medicines for chronic diseases,” stressing that the crisis is “too great to describe.”

The Palestinian pharmacist stressed that supplies have become cut off, given that drug warehouses are located in the northern Gaza Strip.
He pointed out that the medications currently on his pharmacy shelves are “not of the vital and necessary type,” as they include vitamins and nutritional supplements, and are not in great demand.

Many pharmacists explained that although good aid entered the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, most of it consisted of anesthesia medications, and others intended for surgical operations and beyond, without containing medications to treat chronic diseases and other medical conditions.

The most prominent difficulties and challenges remain for those suffering from chronic diseases, who are unable to secure their treatments and medications, after the medical and hospital sector collapsed in Gaza, and the stock of medicines was dissipated in light of the siege and the lack of aid and the increasing demand for it, while the elderly have become outside the priorities in terms of receiving health care, which has become exclusively For the injured, wounded and life-threatening emergency situations.

The World Health Organization had previously warned of an increasing risk of the spread of diseases in the Gaza Strip, due to the bombing that led to the disruption of the health system, the difficulty of obtaining clean water, and the overcrowding of people in shelters.

The organization said: “As the number of deaths and injuries in Gaza continues to rise due to the escalation of hostilities, the severe overcrowding in shelters and the disruption of the health system and water and sanitation networks add another danger, which is the rapid spread of infectious diseases. Some disturbing trends have already begun to emerge.”

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that his country will continue “military pressure” on the Hamas movement, as part of Israel’s implementation of one of the main declared goals of the war, which is “eliminating Hamas.”

The continuous Israeli raids since October 7, accompanied by a military incursion into the Palestinian Strip since October 27, resulted in the deaths of about 19,000 people, most of them women and children, according to health authorities in Gaza.

Hamas launched attacks on areas and towns around the Gaza Strip on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, including women and children, and kidnapping about 240 people and transporting them hostage to the Gaza Strip.
