Human Trafficking Cases Under Investigation in Baja California Sur: Fighting Sexual Exploitation and Slavery

Within the framework of September 23, International Day to Fight Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking28 research folders are kept open by the crime of human trafficking in Baja California Sur.

In response to a transparency request conducted by the Tribuna de México and CPS Noticias team, the Agent of the Public Ministry of the Deputy Attorney General’s Office for High Impact Crime of the State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE), provided the number of cases currently under investigation in relation to the human trafficking and slavery. The data managed by the PGJE is described as follows:

1 file for the crime of human trafficking, criminal slavery type. 2 folders for the crime of human trafficking, criminal type for sexual exploitation. 5 folders for the crime of human trafficking, criminal type for labor exploitation. 1 folder for the crime of criminal human trafficking for corruption of minors. 19 files for the crime of criminal human trafficking without determination.

Likewise, the PGJE revealed that the only victim registered under investigation for the crime of slavery is a 35-year-old female. On August 21, 2019, the General Prosecutor of the Republic (FGR) rescued 16 women of foreign origin who were sexually exploited in clubs in Cabo San Lucas. To date, Mexican authorities are working on policies to eradicate sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Baja California Sur.
