Human Rights: Abdoulaye Diop in Geneva to bring the voice of Mali

Published on 02.28.2023 at 22:33 by Journal du Mali

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye DIOP, takes part from February 27 to March 3, 2023 in Geneva, in the high-level segment of the 52nd ordinary session of the Human Rights Council.

According to the department, the participation of Minister Diop, who is at the head of a Malian delegation, will promote and protect human rights in Mali, highlight the major efforts deployed or underway by the country for the securing and protecting populations and their property.

This high-level council will also be an opportunity, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to carry the message of the Government in order to deconstruct the unfounded allegations on the question of human rights in Mali. On February 7, during the visit to Mali by Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov, Abdoulaye Diop assured that it was necessary to depoliticize human rights. On January 27, during the examination of a report on the situation in Mali, the Minister of Foreign Affairs had regretted “an instrumentalization of civil society”. This indignation followed the intervention of Aminata Cheick Dicko, vice-president of the Kisal organization on alleged abuses by the Russian partners of the Malian army. Several reports point to abuses committed by Wagner in Mali. The government denies the presence of Russian paramilitaries on Malian soil and disputes the accusations made against their partners and the FAMa.

During his stay, several important activities are on Minister DIOP’s agenda, in particular, his meeting with the High Commissioner for Human Rights, his exchanges with the group of African Ambassadors in Geneva and his intervention in the segment of high level of the Human Rights Council.

As a reminder, the Human Rights Council is an organ of the United Nations system whose mission is to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights in the world. Council sessions serve as a framework for monitoring the implementation of member states’ human rights obligations, with the participation of all the actors concerned.
