For the seventh time, the environmental movement “Fridays for Future” is calling for protests around the world against the inadequate climate policy. In Austria, in addition to rallies in Salzburg and Linz, one in Vienna has also been announced.

From 12 p.m. onwards, a line of people should form for miles. All corona rules should be strictly adhered to, as the organizers emphasized. The human chain should form on the Ringstrasse from Schottentor via Karlsplatz to Stubentor. In the three-kilometer queue, all participants should be assigned their own places and connected with the help of colorful banners. Folders should guarantee the mandatory minimum distances, and special attention is paid to wearing an FFP2 mask.
“No more empty promises”
Once again, a strong climate protection law is required. In Austria, too, after a year of turquoise-green, the results of a climate-friendly policy are sobering: “So far, there have been no major throws such as a strong climate protection law and the implementation of an eco-social tax reform”. Despite major political announcements, “greenhouse gas emissions are still rising and the time window to prevent a self-reinforcing climate catastrophe is rapidly shrinking.” Concrete measures are needed instead of many fine words to give young people future prospects again.
Representatives of environmental non-governmental organizations and SOS Children’s Villages take part in Vienna. The demand for an effective climate policy is also supported by an alliance of trade unions (ÖGB), religious communities and the civilian population. This broad support is essential for an eco-social turnaround: Climate protection and social justice must no longer be played off against each other, “says Lisa Kiesenhofer from Fridays For Future.” With the human chain around the ring, we want to symbolize that coping with the climate crisis means keeping all parts together our society needs. “
Trade unions are also calling for climate protection
The trade unions are calling for concrete measures for more climate protection in their sectors: “The climate crisis has massive effects on the labor market. Employees and, above all, trade unions must be actively involved in the implementation of climate protection measures,” demanded ÖGB President Wolfgang Katzian. “We want and we have to actively shape our future, which is why the ÖGB supports the global climate strike. “
“Industrial and production companies are facing a huge change, and politics must support it and finally act”, said Josef Rehberger, federal youth chairman of the PRO-GE union. The railway department of the Vida union is also behind the Fridays For Future climate movement. Chairman Günter Blumthaler says: “Shifting freight and passenger traffic to rail has positive effects on the ecological and social climate.”
Two hours of strike, music and speeches
There will be a strike on Friday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. All employees will do a corona test before the strike. A variety of speeches and live music awaits the participants from the Schottentor to the Karlsplatz to the Stubentor.
