Human case of West Nile fever detected in 18-year-old girl

In a circular dated this Thursday, addressed to the regional directors of livestock and the governors of the regions, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock informs that the Ministry of Health and Social Action has notified a human case of West Nile fever in Kaffrine, in an 18-year-old girl. According to the same source, the care was effective at the level of the health district of Kaffrine.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, Dr Mabouba Diagne specifies that the disease, which is a zoonosis, “is usually transmitted by mosquito bites of the genus Culex”. “Indeed, the horse is sensitive to the virus and the infection can cause fever, encephalomyelitis and paralysis of the hind limbs. Generally, migratory birds play the role of reservoirs of the virus”, it is detailed in the circular.

The authorities are therefore asked to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and to raise awareness among farmers on protection against mosquito bites and the destruction of mosquito larvae.
