Human and Planetary Health: The Urgency of Integrating One Health – Book Presentation and Discussion

October 7, 2023

Surgeon Kees van Laarhoven wrote the book Human and Planetary Health  – The urgency to integrate into One Health (translated: Human and Planetary Health and the need for One Health). Together with other healthcare professionals, he analyzes the major challenges for healthcare in the book, not only in the Netherlands but also worldwide. From an economic and ecological perspective, the book focuses on the future of healthcare, asking the question “How do we organize our living environment so that the global consumption of health care decreases while the health of people and the planet improves?”

Human health and the planet go hand in hand. That is why healthcare must be more sustainable. But how? The book calls on all healthcare professionals to participate in public debate and policymaking. After a thorough analysis of the health legacy of the Industrial Revolution (the Inheritage), a future perspective is outlined of what the living environment in the 21st century could look like: the new humansphere. It is possible, but the young generations Y, Z and Alfa will have to make a difference in the coming economic cycle of sustainability and implement an integrated approach to disease and health in society.

One Health

The book is intended for healthcare professionals, hospital administrators, health policy makers and industries such as food, environment and mobility. In addition to care, the health system also requires an approach from other perspectives, such as the influence of the environment, economy and culture. Only by approaching this in an integrated manner will there be a future for people and planet.

The book embraces the One Health concept and emphasizes the need to rethink healthcare design and integrate it with preventive measures and environmental care to improve both human health and the planet. For now and in the future.

Book presentation
