Salvador Huizar, the older brother of disgraced former Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar, was sentenced Friday to 100 hours of community service adn a $4,250 fine for lying to federal investigators.
Huizar admitted to repeatedly deceiving a federal grand jury and FBI agents about accepting envelopes of cash from his brother, who is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence for bribery and tax evasion.
“It was better that (Salvador Huizar) did not know the source of the cash,” José Huizar reportedly told his brother, according to court documents.
Salvador Huizar pleaded guilty in October 2022 to one felony count of making false statements. His lighter sentence is the result of a plea deal in which he cooperated with the investigation and testified against a development company convicted of bribing José Huizar.
Court records reveal that Salvador Huizar acknowledged receiving cash-filled envelopes from his brother on at least 20 occasions. In return,he would write checks or make electronic payments from his own account to his brother, effectively laundering the illicit funds.
José Huizar originally faced a potential five-year prison sentence for his role in the bribery scheme. He pleaded guilty in January 2023 to conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and tax evasion.
The Huizar brothers’ case highlights the corrosive effects of corruption and the lengths to which individuals will go to conceal their illegal activities.
