Flanders is a self-proclaimed pop guru poorer: Hugo Matthysen (65) puts Clement Peerens in the closet. After 35 years on the hort, from The Palace of Lies to festival stages, the country’s most famous sticky mustache will finally say goodbye next year with a farewell show.

Peulengaleis, Sportpaleis, in the city or among the ‘farmers’: not a corner in Flanders where Clement Peerens has spent the past decades Antwaarps was not going to preach. Hugo Matthysen’s alter ego saw the light of day in the Stubru program in the early 1990s The Palace of Lies – which later shed on Canvas into The pods galley – and grew into a stage performer from 1994 onwards. With shows at just about every medium-sized festival in Flanders and even its own hilarious Belpopdelivery as a result.

Matthysen received support all those years from Ronny Mosuse, disguised as bassist Sylvain Aertbeliën, and Bart Peeters. Due to hearing problems, his type Fatty Swa was replaced behind the drums by Lady Dave, the character of Aram van Ballaert. Although the official story goes that Swa had to drop out because he is in a Thai prison. As The Clement Peerens Explosition, CPeX for short, the company scored (cult) hits with fat lu, foorwijf on Find thou my hole (not too fat in this rock).
Theaters
In September it still sounded that Peerens was temporarily inactive. In 2022, Matthysen will visit the theaters with Mosuse and Van Ballaert to play songs from his own oeuvre. Now the break appears to be final: on December 20, 2022, CPeX will perform one last time in its home city of Antwerp, in De Roma.

Matthysen does not give a reason for the farewell. He only responds through Clement Peerens: “There did you no business. I’m not going to hang that up on you, because you wouldn’t understand that anyway.”
