Hugo Larsson: From Malmö FF to Eintracht Frankfurt – A Rising Star in German Football

Hugo Larsson has had a comet career and in June the midfielder, who then played in Malmö FF, was selected for the A national team, where he was substituted with half an hour left in the international training match against New Zealand.

But now he’s not there. Something that the U21 national team member felt a certain frustration about.

– It is clear that at first it was a little disappointing. I got a call from Janne and he told me how it was. Somewhere I understood that too. I got to play a lot during the pre-season and then I got sick the first two games right before the call-up. The timing wasn’t the best, but that’s how it is sometimes, Larsson tells Fotbollskanalen and continues:

– Somewhere I am convinced that if I continue to play as I did in Germany, I will be there in the future. You shift focus quite quickly. It’s also fun to be here (in the U21 national team).

Last summer, Larsson swapped MFF for Eintracht Frankfurt in a record transfer. The 19-year-old has settled into life in Germany, where he made his debut in the Bundesliga.

– It has been a good start. I’ve only played one match, but training with players at the absolute highest level is incredibly beneficial. The difference is the pace, and that’s the simple answer I give to everyone. You don’t have as much time as you had in the Allsvenskan. I’ll have to get used to it.

Is there anything else? Training methods or something else?
– No. The training is quite similar. You get there at 9 and are home at 3, it’s not harder than that. But the training facility, the arena and everything around it are miles apart. Although we had a good time in Malmö, it’s nowhere near that level out there. It’s just to enjoy when I’m there.

There is quite a lot of pressure around Eintracht Frankfurt. What do you say about your new club?
– It feels very good. I have been there for two months and I enjoy the club and the city and everything around it incredibly well. It is a nice and big club. We are almost always packed, almost 60,000 at every game. Although we had a good time in Malmö, it is three times bigger. Clearly there is a difference. We play in the Europa Conference League this year and aim for a Euro spot in the Bundesliga. It is a club with ambitions.

Larsson does not want to go into detail about what the club has put forward for himself.

At the same time, the midfielder has not left Malmö FF completely behind. He follows the sky blues week in and week out.

– I think we will win gold. It would have been fun. Things have been a bit rough since the summer break. But I hope and believe it will get better towards the end.

And he hopes that his ex-teammates will give him another title after the cup gold last year.

– I will always stay in Malmö. It would have been fun to write on the merit list, concludes Larsson.

Sweden’s U21 play against North Macedonia’s ditto in the EC qualifier on Friday. The match is broadcast on Sportkanalen and TV4 Play.
