It is almost unbelievable, but The Hague has done it again. Zeeland, the beautiful province that has always been treated as the back alley of the Netherlands, is now being “rewarded” with the most disastrous politician of our time: Hugo de Jonge. Yes, you read that right. The man responsible for a corona policy that was a complete mess, the man who only made the housing crisis worse, is now acting King’s Commissioner in Zeeland. My condolences, Zeeland. This is not the leadership you deserve.
Hugo de Jonge, who in every position he has held so far has managed to create more problems than he has solved, is now being presented as the “savior” of Zeeland. What a farce! As if this man, who has already proven that he is incapable of managing anything properly, is suddenly going to look after the interests of the people of Zeeland. His appointment is nothing more than a cynical political move to give him a new place to continue messing around, and this time Zeeland is the victim.
Let’s take a look at his track record. As Minister of Health, he failed glaringly in managing the corona crisis: face mask deals that turned out to be corrupt, a vaccination campaign that got out of hand, and a policy that slid from one debacle to the next. It’s handy that all Zeelanders can soon ask where that 5.2 billion euros in tax money has gone. As Minister of Housing, he showed that he did not understand the housing market at all and only caused more chaos. And now? Now this man is supposedly going to “manage” Zeeland. If that is not a disastrous prospect, we don’t know what is.
And then the way in which this appointment was announced: in a closed meeting in the provincial government building in Middelburg. Of course, because God forbid that the people of Zeeland have a say in who will temporarily lead their province. This is not a democracy, this is The Hague once again banging its fist on the table and installing a politician without any consultation or transparency.
