That Hugo is a fan of shoes has probably already been noticed by many who follow him closely. That is why Art has brought a very appropriate cake: one in the shape of a shoe. He immediately gets straight to the point and asks the minister how things are going. “I think it is great to be able to play this role in these times, but at the same time it is also tough. It is a lot that has to be done and the responsibility is great”, he confesses. His wife Mireille replied: “Sometimes I think: Huug, could it be a little less? A little more time for the family would be nice.”

It is clear that he is passionate about his profession and does not intend to quit soon. “All measures are directly related to people’s lives and I have never felt that so intensely. It is a very nice thing to do.” The downside is that he also regularly receives hate responses. “I can’t always close myself off, but I do try to prevent it from getting under my skin.”
Hugo and Mireille have two children together, son Ismaël (15) and daughter Sarah (12). She is not particularly keen to follow in her father’s footsteps. “Seems a bit boring or something,” she says. “I prefer to go the creative way instead of talking for hours. When I swipe on my phone in the morning I immediately see my father’s head four times, I think: good morning too. it’s nice to hear things earlier. Then they talk about it in the group app and I think: I already know that. ”

This year he has been married for 21 years with Mireille. Love blossomed when they were together in class and Hugo made cassette tapes for her when she was sick. “That was very sweet and then we started dating,” says his wife. It is clear that the love is still there. “It clicked and it was nice to be together and it always has been.”
The couple also says that they text each other during the debate. “A lot of people think he is shaking it up, but I know he is not. He is always nervous about a debate and it also causes tension,” says Mireille. “If I’ve been a guest on a talk show, the most critical message afterwards is always from Mireille, Mireille is my political advisor,” adds Hugo. “The cute thing is that Hugo will always call me first after an interview, no matter what time it is,” she says.

They have quite a few musical instruments at home and according to Mireille, music is the indicator of how her husband is doing. “He sings a lot, if he is doing well. In the car, in the house, in the bathroom. If I don’t hear him sing, I think, hey, what could be wrong.”
