Nicole and Hugo have been going through a difficult period for many months. Nicole has relapsed again fifteen years after her first breast cancer. “Fortunately, we were quick and Nicole doesn’t get chemo, which makes it a bit more bearable,” says Hugo.

These are bad times for Nicole (74) and Hugo (73), the singing couple who have been one of Flanders’ best-known and most beloved duos for years. In January, Nicole lost her mother, in the middle of corona time and in the middle of her treatment for cancer. A diagnosis that the couple already received at the beginning of 2019. After a persistent cold contracted during a holiday in Austria, Nicole decided to go to the doctor. The doctor was not completely comfortable and referred her for further tests. Then it turned out that the cancer that Nicole had battled fifteen years ago and which led to a mastectomy was back.
“I’m not going to say too much about it, it’s bad enough,” says Hugo, clearly affected. “We were there early, we heard from the doctors. There are no metastases. That is another stroke of luck.”
This does not alter the fact that the couple has been living in uncertainty for months. “Luckily, Nicole doesn’t have to get chemo, which makes her feel relatively well. She’s only on pills and she’s responding very well to those medications. So we are hopeful.” Nicole is also not in pain, but as Hugo says: you never know with cancer.
Despite their problems, they try to enjoy themselves together this summer: “Next week we will go to Saint-Tropez for another ten days. We went there in July as well. We have been going to the same hotel on the Azure Coast for 43 years. We are at home there. We have known the grandparents and the parents, now it is the children who run the business. It will please Nicole. We drive there in two days, Nicole can handle that perfectly. But first, of course, a visit to the doctor, to make sure that everything will go well.”
