The fairytale of coach Hugo Broos (71) is over: he could not qualify for the final of the Africa Cup with South Africa. Nigeria showed itself stronger in the penalty series after an exciting semi-final.
It remained 0-0 for a long time and only twenty minutes after half-time did William Troost-Ekong, who once played for AA Gent, manage to give Nigeria the lead thanks to a penalty goal. Five minutes before the final whistle it seemed to be over for South Africa when Victor Oshimen scored again. However, that was not taken into account by VAR: he had seen a violation on the other side of the field prior to the goal. Instead of 2-0 for Nigeria, a penalty for South Africa was the verdict. An opportunity that Teboho Mokoena did not miss and he converted the eleven meter flawlessly.
In added time, South Africa had another great chance, but Mudau blasted it high. With 1-1 on the board, everything had to be done again in extra time. Neither team managed to score and so penalties had to decide the match. Nigeria showed itself to be the most cold-blooded in this regard.
