With Honda retiring as an engine manufacturer after the 2021 Formula 1 season, Red Bull must look for an alternative to both the main force and sister team AlphaTauri. The Austrian formation does not seem to have many options, but F1 journalist Mark Hughes may see a good scenario emerge.
Honda suddenly announced yesterday morning that it will stop its project in Formula 1 after the 2021 season. The Japanese want to focus on an environmentally friendly method and that does not include the premium class of motorsport. Red Bull must therefore look for a new engine manufacturer and the options for this are very limited. It has been suggested that the Milton Keynes team may be partnering with Porsche, but Hughes says Red Bull may also look closer. He doesn’t see it as an unthinkable scenario Mercedes Honda’s chosen path will soon follow and there will certainly be opportunities for Red Bull, he writes in his column Motorsport Magazine.

Hughes thinks that with a bit of luck Red Bull will suddenly have the best car on the field in 2022. However, the scenario must then occur that Mercedes decides to withdraw from Formula 1 as a factory team after the 2021 season. This is not inconceivable, because there has been speculation about a departure from Mercedes for some time. The Silver arrows are active in Formula E and also consider environmental friendliness to be of paramount importance. It could well be that they too will soon change tack and only remain active as an engine supplier in Formula 1.

“Mercedes has a Formula E team,” Hughes says. “The Formula 1 team is already partly owned by Toto Wolff. It would not be a disastrous exit for Mercedes if they also start trading in line with Honda. Especially if they remain as an engine supplier and thus still generate income from all those investments. If that were to happen at the end of 2021, Red Bull could suddenly have the best power source. “
