Hugging Couple Makes You Sleep Better

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Want sleep better quality night? Sleep together couple hugging each other can help you sleep better.

A recent study found that couples who sleep together have improved sleep quality, especially in phases rapid eye movement (REM).

REM is one of the important stages in the overall sleep process. REM is needed by the body to consolidate memories, regulate emotions, and solve problems. REM is also the reason behind the emergence of sleep dreams.

Research published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry this found that the couple had an uninterrupted REM period while sleeping together. In contrast to sleep alone, the average experiencing a disturbed REM phase.

Couples who sleep together also synchronize their sleep patterns. The researchers consider this to be a sign of satisfaction and depth of the relationship.

Researchers even found that the higher the importance of relationships in their lives, the stronger the synchronization of sleep with a partner.

The study was conducted on dozens of young and healthy couples. In the sleep laboratory, the couple’s teenaged sleep process is monitored for four nights, both while sleeping alone or with a partner.

Couples who sleep together have increased limb movements. However, this does not affect the quality of sleep.

“Your body will look a little strange when sleeping with someone, but not with your brain,” said study author and psychiatrist Henning Johannes Drews, launching CNN.

Nevertheless, the number of participants in this study is still relatively small. More research is needed to support this hypothesis.

“Sleeping with a partner might give you extra impetus regarding mental health, your memory, and creative problem solving skills,” Drews said.

REM Sleep Phase

The sleep process is known to have four different phases. REM generally appears in the third and fourth phases of sleep, as the deepest phase of sleep.

The REM phase generally starts around 90 minutes after falling asleep. This is the time for the body and brain to store memories, regulate moods, and dream.

Quality sleep makes a person experience several REM phases which consumes around 25 percent of total sleep time.
