Giant, unprecedented spiders measuring as much as 8 centimeters attacked the US state of Georgia. More and more people in the state are afraid to go out because their cobwebs are huge and can suffocate a person.
Discovered in the United States, the invasive species Trichonephila clavate, native to East Asia, weaves huge cobwebs that can grow up to three meters in diameter. Residents of the state complain that they find hundreds of such cobwebs in their properties.
In recent weeks, the main topic of comments on social networks has been outrage over how fast and massively the spider reproduces.
Will Hudson, a native of Winterville, believes he killed more than 300 species of spiders in his home. And he complains that the front yard of his house has become unusable. “People can’t leave their homes in the morning because of the huge cobwebs that can kill a person,” said an entomologist at the University of Georgia.
A distant relative of this genus of spiders was discovered in Georgia, 80 miles northeast of Atlanta, back in 2014. The species has proven to be extremely invasive and has already taken over areas in South Carolina. According to Hudson, the insect is yet to spread to the southern United States.
Experts expect the insect to spread widely in Europe. Currently, the species has been spotted in Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan.
Ethnologists believe that the spider is not dangerous and bites only when it feels threatened, but can be useful for the destruction of mosquitoes, flies and especially odors, which in recent years have been a particular problem for crops around the world.
