Huge Furry Animal Sneaks Into Bar, Terrifying New York Patrons – NBC New York

NEW YORK – A tourist became the hero of a Brooklyn bar after calmly grabbing and dragging out with her bare hands a possum that snuck into the bar.

A possum in a Brooklyn bar; It sounds like the montage or a joke, but it’s actually the headline for a story you only see in New York.

Sara Fulton became a celebrity after going viral for her brave feat at Temkin’s Bar in Greenpoint on Thursday night. That’s where she was dubbed a hero for saving all the terrified customers from the terrifying experience.

“I was hanging out with my friend outside the bar, the door was open and then all of a sudden we saw this creature run in and we looked at each other, and we were like, ‘Was that a dog? Is that a rat?'” Fulton said. “We both looked at each other and said, ‘That was too big to be a rat! It has to be a possum.'”

The video shows Fulton grabbing the opossum by the neck, then she walks out of the bar and sends the mischievous mammal back into the street, without even ruffling his hair.

Fulton said it was no big deal: She’s not from Brooklyn, she’s from Alaska. The opossum is small compared to the moose family that used to live in her backyard.

“I’m from Alaska and I used to go camping with black bears,” he said. “I think it was instinctive, I just went to him and said, hey, I know you’re scared… and I said okay, I think I’m going to grab you and pull you out because that would be the least painful thing for you.”

Everyone else in the bar quickly panicked, as the only wildlife most Brooklynites are used to are rats and cockroaches.

“I mean everyone went crazy, we couldn’t believe what was happening,” said waitress Rachel Bessemer. “I grabbed my phone, I didn’t know who to call, I thought, this is not what people do.”

After kicking out the possum, Fulton was toasted by the town, or at least the bar, where drinks were lined up for her.

“They bought him so many rounds that it turned into a party afterward,” Bessemer said.
