Huge fire in Pori – A million kilos of plastic burned: “The building is a lost cause” –

One million kilos of recycled plastic burned in Pori along with the industrial hall.

A large building fire broke out in Pori’s Mäntyluodo on Monday evening. Kumeko Recycling oy’s recycled plastic warehouse was completely destroyed in a strong fire.

Firefighter on duty at the rescue service Perttu Kuhanen said early Tuesday morning that work to extinguish the plastic was still underway.

– You could already see from the beginning of the fire that the building was a lost cause.

In a large hall of approximately 2,000 square meters, recycled plastic was stored for approximately one thousand tons, i.e. one million kilograms. Kuhanen says that extinguishing and clearing work will continue at least until Tuesday.

Damages of hundreds of thousands of euros

CEO of Kumeko Recycling Markku Kiviluoma regrets the case.

– Monday could have ended better.

According to Kiviluoma, the financial damages caused by the fire are measured in hundreds of thousands of euros.

According to Kiviluoma, the hall is not staffed in the evenings, but the port guards of the port of Pori drove by the industrial hall about 15 minutes before the fire broke out. Nothing unusual was noticed in the hall at that time. A quarter of an hour later, the hall was already in flames.

– Fortunately, no one was injured, he says.

The dangerous substances created in the fire of recycled plastic did not cause any danger in the surrounding environment. Thanks to the wind, the smoke moved towards the sea.

Kiviluoma adds that the fire extinguishing water did not harm the environment. The water was collected in separate tanks and tankers.

The Southwestern Finland police say that no crime is suspected in the case, at least for the time being.
