Strong explosion heard in Kyiv Ukraine on Friday local time after the country said it was responsible for the sinking of a Russian Navy aircraft carrier in the Black Sea.
The explosion appeared to be one of the most significant in the Ukrainian capital region since Russian troops withdrew earlier this month in preparation for fighting in the south and east.
However, as reported by Reutersthere were no reports of damage after explosions in Kyiv, Kherson in the south, the eastern city of Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk City in the west.
The Ukrainian armed forces said Russian attacks in the towns of Popasna and Rubizhne had been repelled and that a number of tanks and other armored vehicles had been destroyed.
Russian Ship Sinking
Prior to the explosion, Ukraine said it had destroyed the Moscow missile cruiser with its own Neptune anti-ship missile. Russia’s Defense Ministry said the ship sank on Thursday after earlier explosions caused more than 500 crew members to be evacuated.
The ship’s disappearance comes as the Russian navy continues its bombardment of Ukrainian cities on the Black Sea, nearly 50 days after it invaded the country.
