The United States (US) Tsunami Warning System has issued a tsunami warning in the region warning that waves can be up to three meters high. The warning was later lifted hours later.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said there were at least nine aftershocks, with the largest measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale.
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said his party would immediately deploy aid to the areas most affected by the earthquake.
“We will make the necessary arrangements to help people affected by the earthquake in the Southern Peninsula,” Henry said, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Sunday (15/8/2021).

According to the country’s civil defense agency, at least 304 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured. The agency said the toll was likely to continue to rise.
One of the deadliest earthquakes in the world in the last century occurred in Haiti on January 12, 2010. According to official figures, 316,000 people died and 300,000 were injured in an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale that occurred in the south of the country.
