The footprints, measuring over a meter long, are the largest footprints ever found in the Yorkshire area.

The Yorkshire coast is renowned for producing some visually and scientifically significant fossils, including thousands of dinosaur footprints and tracks. A popular destination for professional paleontologists and fossil enthusiasts, people come from far and wide to see what they can find.

This footprint is one of only six such prints that have been recorded in the area, the first of which was identified in 1934. This footprint is a very significant fossil find, not only are tridactyl prints rare, but they are the largest fossil tracks found. . in Yorkshire to date.

“This important find adds further evidence that carnivorous giants once roamed this area during the Jurassic. The type of footprints, combined with their age, suggest they were made by a ferocious Megalosaurus-like dinosaur, with a possible hip height of between 2.5 and 3 meters.” said British geologist Dr Dean Lomax. as reported by the Daily Mail.

Megalosaurus (M.bucklandii), was the first dinosaur to be formally described (1824). About a hundred different genera of dinosaurs have been described from fossils found in the British Isles.

So important were the dinosaur fossils from England that Dr Lomax was inspired to write a book documenting the extensive dinosaur fossil discoveries that have been made on these islands.
