| HUG – Geneva University Hospitals

Myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular accident (CVA) are the leading cause of death in Switzerland and in the world for men and women.
On the occasion of World Stroke Day, the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) are organizing the Thursday 3 November 2022, a day of workshops, screenings and conferences on diseases of the heart, blood vessels and brain. This event is organized in collaboration with Save a life, Fragile Switzerland and the support of the HUG private foundation.

In Switzerland, around 20,000 people die each year from cardiovascular disease, 19,000 suffer from myocardial infarction and 20,000 from stroke. Of these, 25% die and 25% suffer lifelong sequelae. No less than 80% of these diseases could be avoided thanks to a better lifestyle.

Diseases of the heart, blood vessels and brain have many things in common. First, identical risk factors. Smoking, being overweight, cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, physical inactivity and stress, alone or in combination, can cause them. Another similarity is the urgency of the situation. In fact, in the event of a stroke or heart attack, every minute counts. It is therefore essential to teach as many people as possible to recognize the signs and to practice emergency actions.

The goal of this day is therefore to raise awareness of the symptoms and give advice on how to preserve one’s health.
