Hubert Hurkacz Defeats Andrey Rublev in Thrilling Tennis Match

The 26-year-old Rublev, on the other hand, missed his second 1000cc title after Monte-Carlo in April 2023.

Tennis legend Roger Federer attended the match as a guest of honor.

“I don’t know what to say. This is a very emotional title for me. It went back and forth. I’m super happy that I won it in the end,” said Hurkacz on “Sky”: “I hope Roger enjoyed the game.” He dedicated his victory to his grandmother, whose birthday was on Sunday.

At 4:5 in the third set, on his own serve after the point, Rublev loudly attacked a Chinese photographer whose flashlight had disturbed him during the previous point.

Rublev gives up the lead in the tiebreak

The Russian was given a warning by chair referee Renaud Lichtenstein. In the tiebreak, Rublev was already leading 5:3 and had match point at 6:5, which Hurkacz fended off with an ace.

The 26-year-old Pole then used his fourth match point to win the title.

Hurkacz hit a total of 21 aces (Rublev: 13) and, like his final opponent, did not make a single double fault. In sets one and two, one break was enough for the two strong servers to win the set.

Hurkacz sets his sights on ATP Finals

With the victory, Hurkacz can hope to qualify for the season finale of the eight best tennis professionals (from November 13th). In the race to Turin he moved up to eleventh place.

In 2021, Hurkacz triumphed in Miami for the first time in one of the nine 1000 tournaments, the largest tennis events below the Grand Slams. For his success in Shanghai he received $1.26 million in prize money.

Rublev has to settle for $662,360. Despite the defeat, he is unlikely to be able to qualify for Turin.
