The computer system dates from the 1980s and manages the measuring instruments on board. When the system shut down abruptly, all these tools were automatically put into safe mode. Since then, NASA has been trying to get the so-called payload module working again.
NASA has now succeeded in switching to backup equipment, writes the US space agency today. Among other things, the backup of the Power Control Unit (PCU), which regulates the power within the system, has been put into use.
To take advantage of this additional system, NASA had to port several other devices within the telescope to an alternate interface. Only then could NASA connect all equipment to the backup system.

Takes another day
It will probably be another day before the Hubble can actually send scientific information again. The team behind the space telescope is currently monitoring the hardware closely, and is in the process of taking each instrument out of safe mode.
The Hubble Space Telescope launched into orbit on April 25, 1990. NASA wants to keep the Hubble in use at least until 2030.
