Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Joe Biden administration immediately reacted when it found out that the new HP Huawei Mate 60 Pro already supports the 5G network. Moreover, this flagship cellphone is selling well in the market and nearly 1 million units have been sold in 5 days after launch.

United States (US) authorities accused Huawei of violating US trade sanctions by being able to launch devices with 5G networks. The US Commerce Department said it would tighten restrictions on exports to Huawei and the Chinese semiconductor maker.

The US believes that it is impossible for Huawei to manufacture 5G devices without using advanced US technology. It is known that the chip used in the Mate 60 Pro is made by the Chinese manufacturer SMIC.

“This chip could not have been produced without US technology. For this reason, we suspect SMIC has violated the rules set by the US Department of Commerce,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher from the Republican Party, quoted by Reuters, Thursday (7/9/2023).

“The time has come to end all US technology exports to Huawei and SMIC. This is a reminder to all manufacturers who violate our national security rules will be banned from our technology,” he added.

Huawei has been on the US trade blacklist since 2019. Meanwhile, SMIC was also added to the list in December 2020 because it was feared that it could develop advanced technology for the Chinese military.

The problem is that technology suppliers to Huawei and SMIC have already received billions of dollars granting licenses to sell US technology to the two companies. Approximately 90% of the license grants US technology sales rights to SMIC.
