Huawei is in turmoil again. The United States could impose new restrictions on the Chinese manufacturer.
The future darkens for Huawei. After being blacklisted by the United States in 2019, Huawei was unable to use a number of components made by American companies in its smartphones, including 5G chips.
Companies like AMD, Intel or Qualcomm however, still had the right to supply it with 4G chips via exceptional agreements. We were thus able to test recently the Huawei Mate 50 Pro running with a modified Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with a 4G connection.
Huawei also deprived of 4G chips?
According to an inside source, the Biden administration plans to expand the list of prohibitions. This could complicate Huawei’s life even more. The USA intends to add to the list of new products such as 4G chips, WiFi 6 and 7, technology relating to artificial intelligence or cloud computing.
The US Department of Commerce may no longer issue new 4G licenses and may revoke or allow old ones to expire. The US is looking to slow down China’s steady advance in tech.
In October 2022, the Biden administration added a level of control over the export of equipment to design semiconductors below 14nm.
All these restrictions have a strong impact on Huawei, which has confirmed that its Kirin processors will not be back in 2023 due to the lack of manufacturers not using American technology.
If these new restrictions hold true, Huawei will have to adapt and reinvent itself to continue to exist.
