Huawei announced that HarmonyOS NEXT is the second stage of development of the operating system. HarmonyOS NEXT comes with a new user interface (UI) and its own toolkit, SDK, and custom compiler. Huawei claims that this is the first release of HarmonyOS that is completely separate from Android.
The company also plans to add 5,000 native applications to the HarmonyOS application store by the end of 2024. Huawei is also seeking to establish partnerships with other companies and educational institutions to train more than 100,000 developers every month to stimulate the HarmonyOS application ecosystem.

Huawei aims to have more than 500,000 native apps for HarmonyOS in the near future. In comparison, Apple’s App Store will reach 1.78 million applications in 2022. Of course, what Huawei currently has is still far from competing, and this will be a long journey. It is hoped that the presence of more of these applications in the HarmonyOS NEXT ecosystem will also improve the quality of the ecosystem.
Huawei hopes these steps can help the HarmonyOS app store grow more rapidly. However, Huawei has not said when HarmonyOS NEXT will be officially released and available on their devices.
