Selular.ID – Huawei’s Malaysia office has its own Twitter account and tweeted the news that the manufacturer will introduce a global version of the flagship Huawei P50 Pro which focuses on photography on 12 January.
The domestic version of the P50 series was announced in July 2021 and the Pro variant went on sale a month later in China only. Then during the last year, the P50 version for China was released.
The specifications for the Chinese and global models are different. The global version of the Huawei P50 Pro will be powered by Snapdragon 888 4G instead of the Kirin 9000 5G used in domestic models.
For example, the P50 Pro version released in China last year is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9000 5G chipset manufactured by TSMC using its 5nm process node. But with changes made to US export rules in 2020, foundries that use American technology to manufacture chips cannot ship these components to Huawei even if the chips are designed by Huawei itself.

So, once its Kirin 9000 5G chip inventory is running low and empty, Huawei will have to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset in global units. It is a special 4G only variant of the Snapdragon 888 that Huawei is authorized to use and is made by Samsung Foundry using its 5nm process node.

Another change happening for the global version of the P50 Pro is the replacement of Huawei’s HarmonyOS 2 with EMUI 12. Other features include a 6.6-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1228 x 2700 resolution.
The dual-ring camera system features a 50MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture and OIS for stable videos. There is also a 40MP monochrome camera (f/1.6 aperture), 13 MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a 64 MP Telephoto Camera with f/3.5 aperture, and OIS.
Up front, there’s a 13MP hole-punch camera with an f/2.4 aperture.

Huawei P50 Pocket clamshell version similar to Galaxy Z Flip
Huawei is also expected to introduce another foldable phone, the P50 Pocket, possibly on the same date as the global P50 Pro.
While the company’s first two foldable devices, the Huawei Mate X and Mate XS, close outward, the Mate X2 closes inward like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The P50 Pocket’s form factor is a clamshell that folds up similar to the Galaxy Z Flip.

Since 2019, the US has placed Huawei on an entity list for security purposes with a company deemed a national security threat in the state because of its alleged ties to the Chinese communist government.
